Garrison Memorial Park

Proposed
Existing
This project was about the exploration of alternative burial methods through the creation of thresholds between secular and non-secular environments. In an urban expansion of the existing cemetery, the objective is to curb the trend in Gibraltar’s existing burial culture which relocated cemetery facilities, thus taking away opportunity for critical developments.
The themes of Urban design, Landscape integrated architecture, the politics of religion and cemeterial narratives are all explored below.

Part of this project proposes multi-faith burial grounds which are provided for on site. The facilities pertaining to multiple faiths includes prayer rooms, ceremonial halls and private break-away spaces for more personal affairs to be attended to. In order for members of the public to feel accommodated for, I included the design as part of a park-like concept which provided a dual threshold between activities of the living and that of the deceased thus allowing for the nature of the expansion project to become more of a memorial park feature on the peninsula as opposed to a burial ground short of other functions.

Outcome
This project was about exploring the opportunities in the re-appropriation of non-secular and traditional architectural devices to create inclusive environments where all religious faiths and respective cultures felt considered.
